Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day A Homeworkers Perspective
HomeWorkersNet Brings You Work at Home Jobs
More than a decade after it began, take-your-kid-to-work day appears to be losing steam. Now it’s "Keep Your Children In School" day. The event was launched in 1993 and has always fallen on the fourth Thursday in April. But that date has drawn complaints from school administrators for well over a decade, especially because many standardized tests fall on or near the same day.

Nothing wrong with taking a daughter or son to work, if it's possible. But why the third Thursday in April? Why yank kids out of classes when you don't have to? Why in heaven’s name not hold the event in July?

Educators, after playing along gamely for years, have begun pushing back against an event designed to hijack an entire school day and override carefully planned curricula.

Thursday marked the 17th year for Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day. But some school districts sent strongly worded letters or e-mails to parents explaining that taking a child to work would put the youngster’s education at risk. At Dell Inc. for instance, most of the focus was on Earth Day, not Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

The good news is, as a homeworker you have ample opportunity to "take your children to work" everyday because you work from your home. Why limit it to an annual holiday? At anytime you can take a few minutes to show your child what you do and explain the importance of new technologies on the modern workforce. Talk about the difference between owning a business and working as an employee. Show examples of Entrepreneurs and talk about the importance of their contributions to the business world. Share your ideas and explain that the only thing between a great idea and a successful business is the motivation and determination to make it happen. You could even explain how your choice to work from home helps to save the environment by allowing you to use less gas and create less pollution.

Most importantly, you can share with your children your desire to put your family first by choosing to work from home.
